Healthy Spring Cleaning 101

Spring is the time to freshen up your home after months of being closed up!! Open your windows, incorporate plants and flowers inside and gear up for some nitty gritty cleaning.  The last part may not sound very fun, but it’s definitely a necessary task this time of year. keep-calm-and-spring-clean-17

According to Wikipedia.com– one theory on the history of spring cleaning is; “Traditionally, the Catholic church thoroughly cleans the church altar and everything associated with it on Maundy Thursday, the day before Good Friday, in the Spring. Spring cleaning persists today in Greece, and other Orthodox nations. It is traditional to clean the house thoroughly either right before or during the first week of Great Lent, which is referred to as Clean Week. This also often corresponds with the Julian New Year, or April 1.” Good Friday is tomorrow- so you better work quickly! Just kidding…! Unfortunately in Philadelphia, we still get snow in mid March… so airing out our homes typically can’t happen until April! ::sigh::

So how do you clean your home naturally, quickly and with little waste? Luckily DIY cleaners are all the rage right now, so a simple google search can find ways to make natural cleaners for almost anything! Some of the most common ingredients are rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, lemons, essential oils and vinegar. Stock up on these and you’ll be able to clean almost anything!

One thing I implement are microfiber cloths instead of paper towels. This eliminates trash and saves money! There are brands of cleaning cloths such as H20 at Home and Norwex that just use water to clean various surface too (but remember you need to have clean water in the first place… that’s for another blog post)!

Pay attention to those areas you don’t regularly clean and clean them! Refrigerators, kitchen and bathroom cabinets, hard to reach areas behind furniture, etc. You need to move things around to clean up those dust balls and guck. Trust me, you’ll be glad you did!

Lastly, clean your windows- inside and out. This will allow extra sun to shine in and give you’re home fresh touch. It’s not an easy or quick chore to clean your windows so dedicate a good 2-3 hours depending on the number of windows you have. You’ll be glad you did.
