In a previous post I wrote about ways to naturally clean your indoor air (https://kellyshealthyhome.wordpress.com/2017/06/20/how-to-maintain-clean-air-indoors/). But what if you need more? Maybe you just moved to a new home and the previous owners had cats or have a new baby and want to be extra cautious ::cough::cough:: I’ve been reading up on air purifiers and want to share some thoughts.
What does an air purifier actually do? Short answer, it removes contaminants from the air. There are two types of air purifying technologies, Active and Passive. Active air purifier use ionisation for cleaning the air. Passive air purification units on the other hand use air filters to remove pollutants. Most purifiers use high-efficiency particulate air, aka HEPA filters to trap and remove dust particles and other impurities such as pollen, mold, spores, pet dander, and/or dust mites from the air. These filters do need to be changed out frequently, so when looking to buy an air purifier make sure you check the cost for replacement filters costs too.
Passive systems are most efficient and what you’d probably want in your home. I’m focusing on portable, room efficient purifiers for our home. However, there are options for whole house purifiers that may make sense for your needs. We do not have ducts so a whole house air purifier is not relevant for us, but I see them often while house hunting with my clients.
While shopping for our purifier I have been paying attention to the size to make sure it’s comparable with the room we plan to have it located. It might make sense to have multiple purifiers for various rooms of concern. For example, this one for a bedroom or nursery https://www.amazon.com/honeywell and this one for our living room https://www.amazon.com/Rabbit. If you plan to have multiple units, I would recommend buying one to see how you like it first.
The price points, sizes and reviews are a lot to take in. Like most things that can be costly, decide on the price you want to spend and stick to that when researching. I’m a sucker for reviews and rankings as well. Even ask friends or Facebook groups too, personal experience are always helpful. You’ll quickly see there is a trend on the best brands and there are always new and innovative products coming out too. Check out these for your closets or car! The options are endless, do your research and stick to your intentions.
