A large component of creating a happy and healthy is home is maintaining it. You can spend a lot of money on efficient appliances, heaters or products, but if you don’t take care of them, you’ve essentially wasted money. Your property is like your car, you need regular maintenance to keep it running in top condition and last a long time, right?

Tracking maintenance by the season is a simple way to stay on top of your home. For example, here are some Fall maintenance things you should be doing this month:

  1. Schedule your yearly furnace service. This will keep your furnace working efficiently, last longer and helps your bills stay low.
  2. Replace your filters in the furnace- similar to the above tip, regularly replacing your filter keeps your system running smoothly plus it ensures your indoor air is clean- definitely important during colder months!
  3. Check your smoke detectors and fire extinguishers. October is fire safety month and a good reminder to make sure you have an evacuation plan and all your safety precautions in place.

You want to address areas of the home to prepare them for the next season too. Such as;

  1. Cleaning gutters and down spouts. This should be done regularly, but as snow and freezing rain increases toward the winter months, you want to make sure your gutters don’t get blocked and cause draining problems or even flooding.
  2. Detach your hose, drain you spigots and shut off water to the exterior hose pipes to prevent freezing and burst pipes.
  3. Seal all your cracks around doors and windows. This will keep winter cold air from coming in, which would result in your cranking up the thermostat- and your heating bill.
