Sustainable Simple Home Updates

I’ll admit that it is super fun to update my home for the seasons, the holiday’s and just to have a little bit of a refresh. But it can also be very wasteful. So how can you bring out your interior designer and still be mindful?

Think R & R

The first R is- rearrange. Play around with what you already have. Personally, I think we’ve changed our living room layout 5 times the last 5 years being in our home. One, because we just couldn’t figure out the best set up and two, because we want to get a different flow to create better chi. For the best chi energy, you want to easily move through your pathways. If you are almost pumping into furniture or knick-knacks, that is not giving positive energy in your home. We’ve done the same with our daughters bedroom, but I’ll admit that it’s mostly because as they age we’ve been putting more toys in their room and out of our living room! (Which brings me more happiness). Do you have a large plant in your living room, maybe move it to your dining room for different sun exposure. Put a lamp in your guest room that wasn’t being used from another room. Move a mirror from one wall to another wall. I think you get the point.

While reconfiguring your space, it naturally becomes a great way to organize and purge. Get rid of those items that you don’t use nor bring you joy anymore. They may work great for someone else.

The other R in R & R is- redo. Redo what you already have in your home. Think paint! Low to no VOC paint, obviously. Paint an accent wall, or all your walls. If you’re aiming to refresh your kitchen or bathrooms, repaint your cabinets.

We recently repainting our bathroom vanity from the an early 2000’s color to a nice fresh color to change up our bathroom. We definitely plan to do the same in our girls bathroom (their vanity is shown in the picture to the left) soon since it’s a simple and affordable option.

If you do end up buying new accents such as pillows, rugs, tables, remember to be mindful of where you are sourcing them. Check second hand and support sustainable focused companies. You can reference a previous blog post of mine too: furniture-shopping-with-a-purpose

This is meant to be fun and creative! By incorporating sustainable practices into your room design, you can create a beautiful and environmentally responsible space that aligns with your values and contributes to a greener future. Have fun!
