Farmers Market

Farmers’ Market season is upon us! It makes me so happy to see more and more towns around me have their own weekend markets. I can drive 20 minutes and visit at least 3 different markets on any given weekend right now.

Growing up in the 80’s and 90’s, it was not common to visit a farmers market on the weekend. Big grocery stores were where everyone went. Jump to the 2000’s and the demand for local, fresh food picked up again- thankfully! According to wikipedia-  farmers’ markets in the US have grown from 1,755 in 1994 to 4,385 in 2006, to 5,274 in 2009, to 8,144 in 2013. Farmers’ markets help maintain community ties too, combining populations and even bringing more income for the surrounding business’s. Today, farmers market provide more than seasonal vegetables, fruit, and meats. They provide a platform for small business owners to showcase their products and services. If you’re looking to support local, then you must visit your local market.

Here are some of my favorite spots and a few that I’m looking forward to exploring this season:

  1. First is obviously my hometown, Upper Merion Farmers Market– held on Saturdays from 10am-2pm
  2. Conshochoken market is back and I’ve heard better than previous years. Go out and support!
  3. Bryn Mawr’s market is always a popular choice. Stop by between 9am-1pm on Saturdays
  4. Ambler has a great farmers market on Saturdays- 9am-12pm
  5. Berwyn’s market is held on Sundays from 10am-1pm
  6. Lansdale’s market is open until December- later than some others
  7. There are local farms that you can support year round too, and especially this time of year:

Happy shopping and cooking with all your locally sourced foods this Spring and Summer!

If you have other great market and farm suggestions, please comment below so we can all explore and support.
