Electronic recycling

Unfortunately our television is dying. Things just aren’t made to last anymore, am I right? So naturally I started to research how to best recycle our tv as I know electronics need to be handled specifically.

E-waste is a true problem. Electronics are made with finite materials, such as gold, silver, copper, and lithium. Sending a phone or tablet to the landfill means more of these materials need to be mined to make new devices. Also, when they go to the landfill toxic substances leak into the environment, harming ecosystems and people.

Thankfully, more companies are addressing this by allowing to drop off or trade in electronics to avoid the landfill. Did you know, “The Covered Device Recycling Act (CDRA), Act 108 of 2010, requires manufacturers to provide recycling programs for desktop computers, laptop computers, computer monitors, computer peripherals and televisions sold to consumers in Pennsylvania. Other requirements may also apply.” I’m glad this has been in place, but I imagine so many people are unaware of the services.

Here are some resources I came accross:

https://www.costco.com/trade-in-program-phobio.html

I also checked with my county as there are often recycling events throughout various townships. Montgomery County, PA had some good resources listed: https://www.montgomerycountypa.gov/1950/Computers

Definitely look into your local county and municipality for their resources and best practices.

I don’t necessarily care about getting any money from items, I prefer to know it’s staying out of a landfill. But there is a website that I learned about gives you cash for items: http://www.itsworthmore.com. I have not done it, so I don’t know all the details.

As your spring cleaning, make sure you’re cleaning out old electronics and hazardous wastes with care. Throwing everything in a dumpster just doesn’t make it disappear, all trash goes somewhere…
