I’m sure you’ve heard of the term up-cycling, when you reuse objects to create something of more use or better quality. This trend is something I’m totally on board with! In my home I’ve started to reuse jars for storage and drinking glasses, refurbished furniture and also bought an up-cycled vintage vanity (yes, bought and not DIY since I’m still low on time and skills!). Here is example of a dresser I inherited when my parents scaled down. Instead of selling or giving it away, I decided to treasure it! This piece has been in our family a long time, it’s sturdy and I think of my family when I see it. This dresser was my oldest sisters and passed down to eventually me as a preteen.
There is what it originally looked like for over 35+ years! (Please note, this is a generic photo )
We reused the mirror and installed on the wall above our current dresser and then converted the dresser into our dining room buffet. 2 pieces in 1= Green Living!

In addition to reusing furniture you find at garage sales, thrift shops or inherit, you can make your home more sustainable by using organic and natural materials. Choosing wood and bamboo over plastics will limit your chemical exposure. Bamboo can also be found in fabrics along with hemp which are both more sustainable plants to grow. They tend to last longer too!
Don’t forget you can always decorate with nature too! Plants are great for your indoor air quality and visually appealing. You can even decorate using potted herbs so it’s both pretty and functioning! I love to always have fresh seasonal flowers on my dining room table as a focus point. Place flowers in an old glass wine bottle or jar to make it extra sustainable. My next goal is to have a garden for flower to pick for my display, but I fear that may have to wait until our next house.
What do you currently do to make your home green and sustainable? Would love to hear your tips and goals for you making your home healthy.
